| UNCLE VIC'S FIT TIP #27, 2007 — Time to Give Up LSD?
The older we get the less LSD should be a part of our training program. LSD — as in Long Slow Distance. Not only do most of us no longer have the time to get in those long training runs, but our bodies probably couldn't take it even if we did.
As we age, the emphasis should be on quality training instead of quantity training.
If you are a runner, consider limiting running workouts to three times a week, complimented by cross training, strength training and plenty of stretching. Training runs should be short; no more than 3 to 4 miles, but at near maximum pace.
Cross training should consist of swimming, biking or training on a piece of cardio equipment other than a treadmill.
Strength training need be no more than two twenty-minute sessions a week. Just enough to maintain muscle mass. Remember, you naturally lose ½ pound of muscle a year after the age of 35 unless you strength train.
Even if you run competitively, you can follow this schedule with excellent results. You should include two interval training sessions at race pace or faster and one LSD session. A new book by Bill Pierce, Scott Murr and Randy Moss called Runner's World: Run Less, Run Faster includes a 12-week program with specific training workouts.
So remember, cut back on the LSD!
