There is a tendency to have false expectations when starting an exercise and weight loss program. People expect the pounds to just melt away. Often they are the victim of the miraculous claims of television ads and infomercials. "Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!" "Lose seven inches in seven days!" Lynne and I have sold fitness products on television. Do you know the mantra of selling on TV? "Little lies don't sell, big lies do!" That's right. Little lies don't sell, big lies do.

The plain fact of the matter is that you put the weight on one pound at a time and that is the way you are going to take it off. Two to three pounds a week is ideal. Think about it. At that rate you could lose between 100 and 150 pounds in a year! Even one pound a week is 52 pounds a year. And when you take it off slowly it is much more likely to stay off!

Be persistent and stay positive about your weight loss program. Don't beat yourself up! Just like when you learn a new skill such as golf or tennis, you will have immediate success at first, then you will plateau or even retrogress and then you will improve again. And, just like when you learn a new skill, this cycle will continually repeat itself. However, if you keep at it, in the long run you will achieve your weight loss objective!
