UNCLE VIC'S FIT TIP #25, 2007 — Beware the Exercise-Aging Cycle

Victor Brick
exercise-aging cycle

The Exercise-Aging Cycle has a way of creeping into people's lives as they age with serious negative consequences. The most common sequence of events is as follows:
  1. Increasing age;which leads to
  2. Less energy; which leads to
  3. Decreased physical abilities, such as increased body fat and sagging muscles; which leads to
  4. Social/psychological aging, feeling "old", "acting" one's age, feeling increased stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem; which leads to
  5. Further decreased physical activity; which leads to
  6. Physical deterioration, heart disease, high blood pressure, aches, pains, osteoporosis; which leads to
  7. Increasing age; which leads to ----
While this is the normal pattern, you can enter the Exercise-Aging cycle at any point. For instance, you can start to show the psychological signs of aging such as feeling "old": which leads to decreased activity, which leads to physical deterioration, which leads to ----. You get the picture.

How do you get out of this destructive cycle? Why, exercise, of course. Exercise is the only real fountain of youth. While it may not give you immortality, it will allow you to die young as old as possible!

Answer to last week's extra credit quiz: "What is the origin of holding a wake before a funeral?"
In medieval England, people would often be found by the side of the road unconscious. Since no one know what was wrong with them (sometimes they were simply drunk), they were laid out on the kitchen table in hopes that they would wake up. If they did not, they were buried. Hence, holding a wake! That is my story and I am sticking to it!
