Here's a tip on how to make your cardio workouts fly by. Instead of plugging along for 30 minutes on your normal piece of cardio equipment, try combining 10 minute workouts on three different pieces of equipment to break up your workout. For instance, you could start with 10 minutes on a treadmill, then immediately jump on an elliptical cross-trainer or stair stepper for 10 minutes, and then end your workout with 10 minutes on an upright or recumbent bike. Not only will this help to make the time seem to go by quicker but it will also allow you to involve more muscle groups in your workout. In addition, you can increase the intensity of your workout because you will only be on each piece of equipment for ten minutes.
When employing this "Fast Track" technique, be sure to incorporate the following:
- Vary the speed of your ten minutes on each piece of equipment. Start at a low speed and gradually increase your pace until you are close to your maximum speed. Remember, you only need to maintain it for a few minutes.
- Move immediately to the next piece of equipment at the end of the ten minutes. If the type of equipment you originally wanted is not available when you are ready to move, choose another type. It really does not matter which pieces of equipment you use as long as each one is different.
- Use perceived exertion to monitor your intensity level during this or any other type of cardiovascular workout. You should be breathing rapidly but you should never be breathing so hard that you cannot talk without difficulty.
