FROM GOOD OLE UNCLE VICNovember 2006
Que pasa, people, que pasa? Can you believe this weather. If the early pilgrims had this kind of weather they would not have needed the Indians to help them out to grow food.
The answer to last month's trivia quiz, what is the only school to have won an NCAA Division I Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Men's Football National Championship? Why, the University of Maryland, of course. Football in 1953, Men's Basketball in 2002 and Women's Basketball in 2006. Those that got it right were: Pat Hargest, Corky Whiteford, Lauren Schmitt, Mike Harner, Jill Hines, Donna Kropkowski, Adam Holmwood, Gale Seiler, Susan Townsend, Elias Bouloubassis, Ellen Pagliaro and Joe Facinoli.
This week's trivia question: What is the tallest building in the world, in terms of the number of floors! Again, turn your answer in to Lisa at Lisa.Hemovich@BrickBodies.com.
I was at a function the other day and an attractive young lady asked me what I did for a living. Trying to be cute I said, "I change people's lives!" After I said it, I realized that is exactly what I do. And you know what? That is what you do as well. Here at Brick Bodies/Lynne Brick's we change people's lives.
Historically we always thought of ourselves as fitness centers. We got people in shape. We helped them lose weight. We made them bigger. We made them smaller. But now we really do so much more than that, especially with our improved programming and strategic alliances. Now we:
- Help people to relax and be more centered with our yoga and Body FlowTM.
- Help people to stop smoking with our smoking cessation.
- Help people to recover from breast cancer with our "Moving On" program in association with Mercy Hospital.
- Help companies improve workplace wellness with our corporate wellness programs.
- Help people recover from injury and regain normal mobility through our on-site physical therapy services provided by Gold Medalist Physical Therapy.
- Help women regain their self-confidence after pregnancy with our prenatal-post partum exercise classes.
- Bring people together with our parties, field trips and social functions.
- Help increase people's energy, raise their self-esteem, reduce their health risks and generally improve the quality of their lives.
Of course we still help them look better, feel better, lose weight, build muscle, improve their cardiovascular conditioning, and get an endorphin high from our group exercise classes. All of which, by the way, contribute to changing people's lives. However, the older you get the more important the other things become. 60 million Americans will be turning 50 over the next dozen years or so. I am 53. I know, I know, I don't look a day over 51, but it's true. 53! Take it from me, having more energy and having fewer aches and pains is a lot more important to most people over 50 than being able to bench press 200 pounds or even having a slim waist.
In addition, it is estimated that only 20 percent of the American population works out regularly. Again, to that other 80%, it is a lot more important how they feel than how they look. If you lose your health, you lose everything. Anyone that has ever had a bad back or been really sick will tell you that. When you are young and in shape, this is rarely an issue. But as you get older or if you are out of shape or if you have health issues, it is everything.
Yep, changing people's lives. That is what we do. Don't think so? Consider what a corporate client told Jess Sheffield, our corporate wellness director when the woman signed up for our corporate fitness program. "I don't want to lose a lot of weight or have a thin waist or anything. You are going to change my life." That's a statement we should all make a promise to keep.
Yours in Health and Fitness,
