How to Maintain Healthy Feet

August 12, 2011 By: Lynne Brick

This fit tip was filmed at Laguna Beach, California

“Come on, feet don’t fail me now!”  The lyrics to the Edwin Starr’s song, “25 Miles” rings in my head with every step I take.   If you’d like to refresh your memory, here’s the link to this Motown hit!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKIjt765ANM

Why should you be concerned about maintaining healthy feet?   There are lots of reasons, but here are two:

  1. Healthy feet are a critical component to ambulate and stay active. The more active you are the more you can prevent debilitating diseases and stay healthy.
  2. The stronger your feet, the less impact or less chance of creating stress points to your joints. Specifically your ankles, knees, hips and spine.

What can you do to help keep your feet healthy?  Walk in the sand!

Soft sand allows you to roll through your entire foot with a toe-ball- heel action. Plus, walking in the sand allows your feet to push through a full range of motion increasing strength and flexibility in your feet and ankles.

My feet are genetically challenged.  My bilateral bunionectomies (removal of my bunions from both feet) 30 years ago have petered out.  My bunions have returned.  Additionally, I have a hammer toe.  The second toe on my left foot is trying to escape…. Literally!  It does not touch the ground.

Walking in the sand helps my feet to ambulate through full range of motion, increasing flexibility and strength.  Plus, it feels a lot more comfortable than wearing shoes, no matter how flat or high the heels!

I hope walking in the sand can help your feet as well.

Enjoy in good health!

Last week’s question:  What is the “happy hormone”?  Seratonin!

This week’s question:  How old would Lucille Ball been on August 6, 2011?  (P.S. What was your favorite I Love Lucy episode?)

Thoughts for the day:  “The longest journey begins with a single step.”  –Chinese philosopher, Laozi

Lynne Brickism:  The longest journey begins with a single step but healthy feet are a critical ingredient!
