The Commish gets back on course at Brick Bodies!

For the previous eighteen months my knees had been killing me and doing barnwork was becoming less and less fun and more of a chore as I resented walking up and down the stairs carrying bales of hay and sacks of feed.  Now my doctor wanted to put me on another medication for cholesterol, in addition to blood pressure medicine.  On top of this when I played golf I was bending down like an old man to pick up my ball on the occasions when it actually went in the hole.  And these were the things I was doing for fun!

Was it finally time to get fit? Knowing that I needed a convenient location if I was going to make use of a gym/health club, I looked next door to my office and thought that Brick Bodies fit the “close enough” test.  Now to see if it fit the rest of my perceived needs!

I didn’t know what to look for in a club but I was impressed with the availability of various group classes that came without additional cost.  I’m not much of a “group person” but it was a nice plus, my wife, Pam, has attended Saturday morning classes as she is just the opposite and doesn’t like individual activities.  Along with the treadmills and bikes, I thought I might use some of the resistance machines so I gave myself nine months to see what would happen.

In January 2008 I joined Brick Bodies to improve my overall conditioning and flexibility, and, of course, lose some weight so I could be “less obese,” according to government guidelines.  In case you are wondering, I don’t really give a fig about “government guidelines” but I did want my clothes to fit better and it really would be nice to lose “those twenty pounds” that I have been carrying for too long.

So to date, here is my progress: I have lost a little weight (not those 20 pounds, though I wear 38’s now instead of 40” pants), my knees feel much better, I am not taking the cholesterol medicine (because I didn’t go back to the doctor’s) and I even shot an even par round of golf (36 for 9 holes) since I joined Brick Bodies.  In truth I can’t really credit Lynne and Victor with the good round of golf unless they want to also take responsibility for the eighteen over I shot the next week.

That brings me to today as I start my Brick Bodies’ blog.  I intend to bring a bit of honest assessment of my journey to fitness and occasionally find some humorous item to poke fun at.  For the record I am starting at 208 pounds and 6 foot tall.  I hope to be 185 pounds (back to my college weight) before I become 5’11; at my age this is a real race.
