The Road to 100 Fit Tip #65 Slow Down to Lose Weight
December 16, 2010 By: Victor Brick
Everyone is concerned about gaining weight during the holiday season. As we have said in past fit tips, it takes about 15 minutes for the stomach to send signals to the brain that it is full. This means that if you eat your food quickly, like most people, it is easy to continue to eat even if you are satiated. Here are four ways to slow down to lose weight:
1. Eat slower. Most Americans eat way to fast. After all, didn’t we invent fast food? Eat your food slowly. Enjoy it. Engage in pleasant conversation if you are eating with others.
2. Take a time-out, two-minute break in the middle of your meal. Just relax and catch your breath. Get up and walk around. Stare at other people if you are eating out! Give your stomach a chance to decide if you are still hungry.
3. Put small portions on your plate. This will mean you will have to take the time to go back for seconds if you want to eat more.
4. When eating at home, do not bring the serving dishes for your food to the table. Keep them on the stove or kitchen counter. Again, this will cause you to have to get up and take extra time if you want to go back for seconds.
This week’s corny joke: What do elves learn in school? The elf-abet, of course.
